Celtic Eagle Brooch
This brooch measures approximately
3.5 inches long x 1 inch high. The Celts were masters of knot-work designs
using many animals including dogs, birds such as the eagle, and snakes to
form fantastic designs. This type of animal motif is known as zoomorphic
designs. This Celtic eagle brooch is one of the more simple and realistic
of the ancient Celtic designs. The Celtic people thought of the Eagle as a
fearsome bird. In Celtic stories the Eagle is a bird noted for wisdom and
long life. The Celtic eagle represents swiftness, strength, keen sight and
nobility. The eagle is also the symbol of Saint Matthew. Some of the
illuminated letters in the Book of Kells are in the shape of eagles. The
Book of Kells is probably the most famous source for Celtic Art. |
