The CHEMISE was basic to a colonial, civil war, and fur trade era womans wardrobe. It served as both an undergarment and a nightgown but was also called a shift or a smock and was worn as a dress for everyday use. It was belted or worn with an apron to gather the waist when worn as a dress. Our CHEMISE has a ribbon gathered scooped neckline and sleeves that gather at or below the elbow. The construction techniques are authentic complete with gussets under the arms. All our chemises feature delicate lace trim at the neck and sleeves unless you request plain. CHEMISE with ruffle
