The CHEMISE was basic to a colonial, civil war, and fur trade era womans wardrobe. It served as both an undergarment and a nightgown but was also called a shift or a smock and was worn as a dress for everyday use. It was belted or worn with an apron to gather the waist when worn as a dress.
