1880's
Day Dress-View A Front
By
the late 1800's ladies clothing had taken two directions: Health and
Artistic (sometimes called Aesthetic) The influence of the popularized
Artistic movement is apparent in the sleeves of this simple 1880's day
dress. The Artistic lady dressed to capture a bygone classic era.
While she wore her sleeves long and her bodice snug, she strove for
freedom of movement and comfort. She cut her garments fuller and avoided
using stays (boning). In contrast, the fashionable lady adjusted to
bodice darts, and the side and back seams to achieve a tight fit. The
sleeve would have been tight and 1" above the wrist. This pattern
is copied from a dress in the extensive collection of Mrs. Virginia
Kimble of Wilmington, Illinois.
